Calbee

The Japan based company Calbee entered the UK market in 2014. The key product for European development is a savoury ‘crisp’ style snack produced from vegetables rather than potatoes known under the Yushoi brand. Using the springboard of a Welsh Government Norway Food and Drink trade mission in late May 2016, the company commissioned SCI to research seven Northern European countries to evaluate the markets and identify potential commercial routes to market.
SCI undertook extensive research and subsequently provided a comprehensive report that included consumption and market trends for crisps, EU food consumer regulations and labelling requirements. The report also identified the primary competition within each country, forecasts for growth based on the most recent data from subscription sources.
Distributors were identified and evaluated for applicability and a comprehensive list of potential overseas partners provided.
The comprehensive SCI report, provided Calbee with a platform to prioritise target export markets, approach agents and distributors and begin to develop their European market. A successful approach that continues today.

Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company

The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company (PBFC) is a boutique speciality food producer using seaweed as a key ingredient. It also runs an award-winning street food catering business. Having found success in the UK market, the Managing Director commissioned two reports over a twelve-month period to research and access similar markets in the United States and Japan respectively; retail across high end delicatessens and distribution channels to ascertain commercial viability for their very niche products. Delicatessens, wholesale distributors, high-end catering and hotels were all highlighted together with consumption data, competition, and market trends.
Each market was very different, in distribution structure, culture and working practice. The SCI research revealed both to have great potential and specific approaches recommended to ensure their export success.
